MTA Long Island Bus - Dynamic Messaging SoftwareFounded in 1973 under the name Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority by the combination of ten privately-chartered bus companies. The system consists of 417 buses running 54 routes covering 995 miles (1,601 km). LI Bus is part of a regional transportation network with bus/rail connections at 48 LIRR stations and service to five NYC Transit subways.Long Island Bus with cooperation from Long Island Rail Road, built an Intermodal Transportation Center in Mineola. Long Island Bus wanted to create a dynamic messaging and signage system that would provide train customers with information about connecting bus service.

SOFTWARE SOLUTION DEVELOPED
President Derek Fretheim conceptualized a system that applied similar systems used to provide connecting flight information developed for the airline industry. After meeting with Long Island Bus officials, he defined the overall system, created the scoping document and oversaw the development of dynamic messaging system. The system includes a web interface that allows Long Island Bus staff to manage the signs remotely, modify the bus route database, post rider alerts, and related messaging and management.
